Time flies! And tax season will be around the corner in no time! 

1. Make Sure You Have All Your Documents

Before you even think about filing, gather all your tax-related paperwork. This can include:

  • W-2s from your job
  • 1099s if you’re self-employed or did freelance work
  • Bank statements
  • Childcare expenses
  • Student loan interest statements
  • Health insurance forms

Having all your paperwork in one place can save you time and avoid mistakes later. 

2. File Early to Avoid Delays

The sooner you file, the sooner you can get your refund (if you’re owed one). Filing early also helps protect you from tax identity theft — where someone tries to file a return in your name to claim your refund.

3. You Might Qualify for Tax Credits (Even If You Didn’t Last Year)

Life changes — and so do your tax benefits. Did you:

  • Have a baby?
  • Pay for childcare?
  • Start school?
  • Make less money than last year?

You might now qualify for credits like:

  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Education Credit (American Opportunity or Lifetime Learning)

These credits can reduce the amount you owe or increase your refund, so don’t skip over them!

4. Self-Employed or Side Hustling? You Have Extra Steps

If you made money from:

  • DoorDash, Uber, Instacart
  • Selling items on Etsy, eBay, or online
  • Freelance or contract work

Then you’re considered self-employed — and the IRS wants to know. You’ll need to report that income, but the good news is: you may be able to deduct expenses like gas, phone bills, supplies, or home office use.
